Baby Maffo (as requested by @BellDomRussell :D)
I read this little article (via lapetitecoccinelle, tanjatheawesome) about the physicist Dr. Roger Penrose (he along with his dad Lionel so happen to have come up with the “Penrose Steps” that we talk about in Inception) and this discovery he made last November. From what I can grasp of it, and I could easily be getting this pretty wrong, they’ve observed some circles way the fuck out there that don’t make sense within the currently accepted “inflationary” idea that the Big Bang happened out of nowhere, that the universe is expanding, and that eventually it’ll all be over. (The technical paper is here, I can’t follow the details at all, but sometimes it’s fun to try reading in languages I don’t understand :)
Well, I searched around, and it turns out Penrose published a new book last year called Cycles of Time: An Extraordinary New View of the Universe. According to the review I read, with some mind-numbing maths, Penrose argues that as time ends in the era of massless particles, the fate of our universe can actually be reinterpreted as the big bang of a new one: “Our universe is what I call an aeon in an endless sequence of aeons.”
I’m pleased. The beginning-middle-end quality of the “Big Bang” theory as I understood it never did jive with my intuition favoring a more repetitive rhythm to things. RE<3
